Wide Date, Re-punched “8”, Tall "6" / Short "6", Low "5" & Re-Engraved Gothic "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This next variety initially appears to be very similar to the previous listing, but under closer observation, it can be seen to have some significant differences. It is similar in that it has a Wide Date with a Re-punched Tall "6" Over a Short "6", but unlike the first variation, the "5" has been positioned slightly Lower in the date. Also, the numeral “8”, on some of these examples, displays obvious signs of Re-punching to the Lower Left Side of this digit. Interestingly, this feature does not occur on all these examples, which would indicate that it would be a Sub-variety from either a Different or Modified Die. Finally, it also has a Re-Engraved Gothic "W", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", which can be easily seen under low magnification. Remnants from the Original "W" can be clearly observed on either side of this Altered character. There are currently six varieties which have this style of Gothic "W", and four of these have been noticeably modified! While searching for the identification of a specific variety, this information will be very helpful, by significantly reducing the number of potential matches!
