1873 Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · 11 varieties · study revised Mar. 10th 2018
This date seems to be very popular with collectors of NFLD coins, and like many of the other years, it too has a large number of varieties associated with it. However, the differences between these variations are often quite subtle and their individual peculiarities may be a little more difficult to recognize as compared to some of the other years. Perhaps the best place to begin this process of elimination, is with the Date. Basically, this year can be divided into both Narrow, Medium and Wide date variances, which can be very helpful during the determination of an unknown variety. Once this has been established, it becomes necessary to look at some of the other features in order to further refine this process. It is at this stage, when the Numbers and Lettering become essential to the identification of a questionable variety. Because so many of the Characters have been uniquely modified, some of these will now make it possible to make a definitive identification of a specific Variation.
