1872 H Newfoundland 50 Cents

Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised Oct. 16th 2013

The 1872 H Newfoundland 50 Cents is particularly interesting because it has at least two known varieties which have noticeable differences on both the Obverse and Reverse sides of these coins. The 1872 issues were all minted by the Heaton mint, which also included its distinctive letter "H" at the base of the Queen's bust. However, the positioning of this "H" was not the same on all of these coins. One variety has its Mint Mark punched Farther from the base of the bust and a little to the Right side of the letter "N" (located directly below it), whereas, a second variety has its "H" located a little Closer to the base of the neck and positioned more Centrally over the "N".

The Reverse sides of these coins also have some very interesting and noticeable variances. There are both "Narrow" and "Wide" Date variations, which illustrate subtle differences in the Spacing between the "7" and "2" of their dates. In addition, one of these varieties has an extensively Re-engraved "N" and there are also other letters, like the "C" and "S", which illustrate some modest signs of having been Altered on both of these varieties. However, these Modifications are not nearly as spectacular as the aforementioned "N"!
