As it now stands, there are no fewer than four very different varieties for this date, with still others possibly to be discovered. Many of these variations come as a result of Repunching and Re-Engraving of the Numerals and Lettering on the Reverse side of these coins. It would appear that the officials at the mint were either trying to extend the life of the dies or they were unhappy with the weaknesses that so often occurred with these strikings. Regardless of their reasons, their actions have left us with a wealth of forensic evidence which is a direct result of their decisions!
