1872 H Newfoundland 10 Cents
Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised July 6th 2020
With a mintage of only 40,000, this date did not seem to be a very promising pool of coins in which to find any varieties! However, this assumption did not survive very long before an interesting variety finally surfaced. The origins of this new variation evoke some interesting questions! The first and most obvious of these is, whether this can be classified as a legitimate variety or was it a Mint Error? It is a difficult question to answer because the nature of this variation suggests that it was more intentional than random! The fact that two similar dots have been found side by side, seems to indicate that they were more likely deliberate than accidental. It is quite possible that they might have been made by an engraver who either added them intentionally or possibly, accidentally! Most likely no one will ever know for sure, but it does seem almost certain that an engraver had made some modifications to this die. It appears that several Letters (in the word "CENTS") had been Re-engraved, with the "T" being the most noticeable. This would indicate that the Die had been in the hands of an individual who was either careless or made this his own personally coded signature. Whatever the truth, this variety is still interesting, because every collector loves to find extraneous dots on their coins!
