1881 Newfoundland 20 Cents
Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised July 23rd 2013
The 1881 coinage initially offers two different varieties with both a Narrow and a Wide Date variation. In this case, the differences between these two types are certainly less spectacular than those found on the coins minted during many other years from this Victoria series. Never-the-less, they are still significant.

The easiest way to identify these coins is to observe the size of the gap between the "1" and the Ornamental Ring of Beads. In this respect, it can be readily seen that there is a slight but noticeable difference between these two varieties. As can be expected, there are also some minor variations which can be observed in the spacing between the last three numbers. However, intially these differences may seem to be more imperceptilbe than obvious.
It appears that both of these varieties can be found in approximately equal numbers, but they are extremely difficult to find in higher grades.
