1888 Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · 3 varieties · study revised Feb. 1st 2018
With a mintage of only 50,000 coins, it represents the second lowest large cent production for any year of the entire Victoria series! Only the 1885 issue had fewer coins minted with its 40,000 pieces. With such low numbers, it often becomes more difficult to find varieties because of fewer dies being used, and also because of the lower demand for these coins. However, the 1888 was not a disappointment because it does have at least three varieties with one of them being particularly interesting. The main differences can be found with the positioning of the last three digits, which have been punched at various distances from each other. Also, all of these varieties show some visible evidence of the "8's" having been Re-punched, with one of them being quite noticeable!
