Newfoundland Coin Varieties

Royal Mint records

What the Royal Mint itself recorded about Newfoundland's coins: how many it issued, how many it actually struck, and how many dies it used to strike them.

Every coin was struck by a pair of dies: an obverse (the monarch) and a reverse (the value and the date). In these years the date was punched into each reverse die by hand, so a year struck with several reverse dies had several chances to produce a different date position or a repunched digit, which are the kinds of variety Barry documents. The die counts don't map one-to-one onto varieties: changes to the master die affect every working die made from it, and a die could be used across two years. Where the numbers disagree is worth a closer look.

  • Coins issued: the Mint's table of every coinage delivered to Newfoundland, 1865–1890, given in dollars and divided here by face value. These match the Charlton catalogue mintages except in 1873, where Charlton follows the Mint's count of coins struck that year (1873 report) rather than the coinage ordered.
  • Coins struck, dies used: the Mint's yearly statement of colonial coins struck, with the number of obverse and reverse dies. Each figure was read from the page image and checked: coins ÷ pairs of dies equals the printed coins per pair.
  • Charlton mintage: the figure in the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins (60th edition, 2006), the standard reference most collectors use. It's the mintage shown on each year page.
  • Coinages made under contract by Heaton in Birmingham ("H") and at Ottawa ("C") don't appear in the London die records.
