1898 Newfoundland 50 Cents
Victoria · 3 varieties · study revised Aug. 12th 2022
Presently, there are three known varieties for this date, one of which is very rare and quite difficult to find in any condition. Of these known variations, two have Wide Dates and can be found with the younger Portrait 1 effigy of Queen Victoria, while the third carries the somewhat older Portrait 2 likeness. In addition, the word "NEWFOUNDLAND" is of major importance because of the differences to the size of the "W". Two of these varieties can be found with a smaller letter "w", whereas, the third has been Re-engraved with a Larger character. Also, this particular variation comes with a cluster of irregular "Dots", situated between the letters "N" and "D". This makes its Obverse identical to that of the 1896 Large "W" variety.

The rarest of these three varieties has the Small "w" combined with the Portrait 1 effigy. From the current data, it would appear that there were no more than 6,000 coins originally minted for this particular variety.
