1885 Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · no varieties known · study revised Feb. 1st 2018
The Mint Reports show that 40,000 coins were minted for this year, which is the lowest mintage number for any of the Victoria dates! It also appears that all of the coins issued were from a single Reverse Die with no known varieties! Of course, there is always a possibility that one or more might eventually surface, but at this moment, there is just ONE! In spite of this, these coins have a couple of characteristic which are worth mentioning. Several Letters display signs of Re-engraving, but the “E” in “ONE” has been noticeably Modified with the Original Character clearly visible along the Back and Bottom of this Letter. In addition, the last 3 digits of the date have been Re-punched, and 2nd “8” has been positioned slightly Higher, making the date appear somewhat uneven.
