1873 Newfoundland 50 Cents
Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised Oct 20th 2013
For some time now, it had been common knowledge that there was at least one Re-punched variety for this year. However, more recent research of this date suggests that all of the coins minted for this year, have been modified with what appears to be two stylistically different "3's"! As a result, two unique varieties have occurred with both having a Re-punched "3" in its date, and the second of these has a Re-engraved "T" (in "CENTS"). The first of these two variations has a Wide Gap "3", which has its ends opening outward, exposing more of the Original digit than that of its companion. However, with the second variety, the "3" has a Narrower Gap with its ends held Closer to its body, covering most of the underlying numeral. In both cases, the original digits are still visible at the ends of these "3's", but it is much more pronounced on the Wide Gap "3" variety! It is still quite possible that other examples will be discovered which do not have these Modified "3's". If this does occur, then they must be considered very rare, indeed!
