CVI Newfoundland

1941 Newfoundland 5 Cents

George VI · 9 varieties · study revised May. 15th 2019

At first glance, the 1941 issue seems to be a relatively uninteresting year, without offering anything particularly unusual or unique. However, under closer scrutiny, this first impression changes dramatically. With the highest mintage for any single Newfoundland issue, it would only seem logical that this group would contain a wealth of different varieties. In fact, the initial research quickly revealed the existence of both Wide and a Narrow date variations and as the search was expanded, these numbers increased significantly!

Shortly after the early discoveries, it became apparent that the Numeral "1", was found to be positioned at many varying distances from the "4". Not only did this produce the Wide and Narrow date variations, but also, it gave rise to a whole new group of Intermediate dates as well! Finally, with the discovery of many Modifications to both the Numbers and Letters on these coins, the 1941 has now turned from the uninteresting to the exciting!

At the moment, nine different varieties have been identified and it is quite conceivable that more will be discovered. The following list of these variances has been arranged in such a manner as to illustrate the continuous progression of the Numeral "1", from the Narrowest to the Widest Date variations.
