CVI Newfoundland

1874 Newfoundland 50 Cents

Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised Aug. 10th 2022

As with the previous two dates, the 1874 Newfoundland 50 Cent coins were also subjected to Die modifications. At the moment, there appear to be two different variations which are both interesting and somewhat unusual! The first of these varieties has been noticeably Re-engraved, with both the "C" and "S" showing traces of these Alterations. Also, the "7" has been Re-punched, but because of the general weakness so often found on the Reverse of these coins, these changes are not always readily visible! The second variety, also displays some traces of Re-engraving, however, these modifications are quite different to those found on the previous example. In this instance, the "4" has been Altered, but the nature of the Original digit is unclear, and it seems to be unrecognizable. This numeral appears to be sitting on a Bug and also, the cross of the "4" has a small tail protruding from its end (this last characteristic is difficult to see on the more heavily circulated coins).

Finally, it should be noted that the "S", in the word "CENTS", has been Re-engraved on both of these varieties, but the end results were somewhat different! Each variety originally had the "S" positioned Lower than the other Letters in this word, however, after these modifications were made, its location on the First variety was raised slightly, making it Even with the others!
