CVI Newfoundland

1896 Newfoundland 20 Cents

Victoria · 3 varieties · study revised Aug. 17th 2013

Each date has its own peculiarities and the 1896 is no exception. Without question, this year is unusual because there appear to be more varieties listed in the various numismatic publications, than there are of the actual coins found with this date! It is possible that all of these varieties do exist but the fact that some of these have never been verified or photographed, suggests that they are either far rarer than had been previously believed or they do not exist at all!

It has been known for some time now, that this date was minted with both Portait 1 and Portrait 2 Obverses, in combination with a Reverse having either a Large or Small "96" in the Date! However, at the time of this publication, no examples of a Portrait 1 with a Small "96" or Portrait 2 with a Large "96", has yet to be found for examination! Neither of these questionable varieties will be included at this time because their existence cannot be confirmed! Of course, this may all change and any subsequent editions will include any others that have been located and verified.

This section will only includes the three varieties which have been positively identified. These are: Por. 1, Wide Date, Large "96"; Por. 2, Narrow Date, Small "96" and Por. 2, Wide Date, Small "96".
