1876 H Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · 12 varieties · study revised Aug. 9th 2020
This date is a very interesting and popular choice for collectors of this Victoria Large Cent series. Like many of the other years, it comes with dates of varying sizes and also, the Letters and Numerals quite often illustrate definite signs of Re-engraving*. In particular, the three "E's", found on the Reverse side Legend, can be very helpful with the identification of these numerous varieties. However, herein lies the pitfall! Under normal circumstances, the altered letters would be enough to identify a particular variety, but in this situation, more care must be taken! All of the Large Cents of 1876 demonstrate some modifications to these letters, but many have their own unique characteristics. It is through these subtle differences, which make it possible to recognize a specific variety! At the moment, there are 12 known variances which are listed in this section and all can be characterized by the positioning of the last two numerals in the date, along with the unique alterations made to many of the Letters. In addition, the Mint Mark "H" has been positioned at Various Locations under the knot in the Wreath, on the Reverse side, and this feature can be most useful with the identification of several of these varieties.
