Widest Date, Re-punched "6", Even "5", Modified Letters & Extensively Re-Engraved, Gothic "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The Widest Date listed in this section is perhaps one of the rarest in this series. In this instance, the spaces between the Numbers in the date, are noticeably Wider than those of the other variances listed in this first section. This has resulted in an exceptionally Wide Date which is quite easy to recognize when compared to any of the other varieties. As with all of the other variations found within this family, the "6" has been Re-punched, but the effects are far less spectacular than those found on some of the other members. Also, the "5" has been positioned evenly in the date, which helps to define its characteristics. In addition, the Reverse side Lettering has been extensively Re-engraved with some of these characters being very noticeably altered. The Letter "W" is Gothic in style and is very interesting with its eye-catching modifications. It has a striking resemblance to the "W" found in the second of these Wide Date variations, but there are some subtle differences between them. Finally, this particular example displays signs of a Die Crack running from the Rim of the coin, up past the Left Leg of the last "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", and through its top. Perhaps it might have been an indication that this Die was deteriorating, and resulted in a very short life span!
