Medium Date, High-Right "H", Even "72", Repunched "7" & Re-Eng. Letters
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The first of these Medium Date varieties can be identified by its Even "72", and by the Mint Mark "H", which has been punched quite High above the second "N", in "OUND". Also, by examining the Reverse side, it can be seen that the there are a couple of interesting Letters which should be helpful with the identification of this variance. The first of these is the "N", in "ONE", which has been modified in such a way as to give it a very unique appearance. In addition, the last "D", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has also been Re-engraved, leaving traces of the Original character visible on its Upper Left side. This is particularly interesting because both of the "D's", found in the Reverse Legend, are very rarely seen to display any significant signs of Re-engraving!
