Widest Date, Centre-Right "H", Very Wide "87", Letter "E" with Spur
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This final listing has the Widest Date of all of the known variations for this year, and it also has the Widest Gap between the "8" and "7". In addition, the "8" has been noticeably Re-punched with traces of the Original numeral clearly visible on the Right side of the digit. Like many of the other Victoria Large Cents, this variance also illustrates Modifications made to several of the Letters in the Reverse Legend, however, only the Letter "E", found in “NEWF”, can be considered significant. It has a very tiny Spur protruding from the Bottom segment of this character, and its recognition will authenticate this particular variety. All of the examples of this variation, which have been examined, have displayed signs of a Die Clash. Of course, there is no guarantee that every example will have this feature, but it is something to be considered.
Note: On the following photos, many of the Re-engraved letters have been highlighted with
a bracket, [A], in order to emphasize the more extensively altered letters. Several
of these can be very helpful with the identification of a particular variety and have
been included as enlargements, which can be found at the end of the photo section.
