Medium Date, Low "73"
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The final listing of these Medium Date varieties is somewhat problematic when it comes to making a conclusive identification. In this situation, the differences are so subtle, and in the absence of any particularly outstanding characteristics, it is often better to eliminate the others within this group in order to isolate this variance. Perhaps the best place to begin is with the Date, which has been punched with a Low "73", however, this is also true of the previous example. With some difficulty, it can be seen that in this instance, the "7" is slightly Lower. Also, the Wire Border might be useful because its structure is very fine and in some locations, above the "ONE" & below the "NEWF", it is made up of two single strands. This contrast with the previous example which has a markedly Heavier and Thicker appearance. Finally, it can be seen that this variety also has many Re-Engraved Letters, but their effects are not nearly as prominent as those of the previous variation. The Letter "E", in "ONE", is a good example of these modifications.
