Wide Date, Even "0", Wire Spur (Left Side)
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
In this instance, this variety may seem to be as difficult to recognize as some of the others, that were listed beforehand, but it does have a few features which will help with this process. After it has been established that the coin has a Wide date, then the next logical step would be to check the positioning of the "0". In this case, it will be found to be Even with the other numerals in the date. This may not seem to be very important, but if you consider that many of these Wide date varieties have Low "0's", then it is possible to eliminate at least half of these variations. Also, both of the "8's" have been extensively modified, leaving traces of the original numerals, clearly visible on both the Inside and on the Outside of these digits. Finally, there is a rather extensive Wire Border Spur found on the Left side of this variety, adjacent to the two outer leaves in the wreath. It may not be apparent initially, but when identified, it is the defining characteristic of this specific variance.
