Wide Date & Re-Engraved Letters, (e.g., "N's", "E's", "W", "F" & "A")
1890 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This final variety also has a Wide Date and in many respects, appears to be very similar to its nearest relatives. The Letter "A", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been Re-engraved noticeably to the Left of the original character, leaving much of it exposed on the Inside of the eye and along its Right edge. This effect has left the "A" with a very Off-centered appearance, in much the same way as it has with the first Wide Date variety. All of the known variations for this date illustrate some degree of Re-engraving to their respective Letter "F", in "NEWF", but they are all slightly different. With the exception of this particular variety, each of the others clearly display the remnants from the original character, beneath the Lower Arm of the "F". However in this case, the remnants from the original Letter can be seen above this Arm, making this a defining feature!
