Coin #1 in Barry's study

The first of these varieties has the Narrowest of the dates and it appears that it was derived from an 1870 die which was modified by over-punching the "7" with an "8"! In this case, a tiny part of the original numeral is still visible at the top right hand side and also at the bottom of this digit.
