Wide Date, Plain "8"
1880 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The last of these three varieties has a noticeably Wider date, with both it's "8" and "0" located farther to the right. Initially, this variation looks very much like the previously mentioned Medium Date but the repositioning of these last two numerals has left this example with a Wider gap between the two "8's"! The unusual thing about this variety, is that there does not appear to be any significant remnants of the original "7", noticeably visible around the second "8"! As stated in the introduction, this may be the result of the re-positioning of the "8" or possibly the use of an entirely new die! Some of the Wide Date coins, which have been examined, seem to show minute signs of this Over-punching but to date, none of these examples have proven to been conclusive! For the purpose of identifying this particular variety, it can be considered a Plain "8".
