Even, W, Wide 89, Re-Engraved "W, T & 9"
1894 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The first of these two known varieties appears to be the more common of the two but in comparison to most of the following years, this date is quite difficult to find (particularly in higher grades)! There are several areas of this variety where variances occur but perhaps the most noticeable of these, is in the date where the 8 and 9 are separated by a Wider gap than that of its companion. Also, on the Reverse, the 9 shows definite signs of Repunching and the Lettering in the word CENTS show traces or Re-engraving. This is particularly noticeable on the Left arm of the T. In addition to these variations, the W (in NEWFOUNDLAND), displays definite signs of having been Modified. In this instance, this Re-engraved new W has been Positioned Evenly with the rest of the lettering, but some Remnants of the Original Character appear to be "floating" above this Altered Letter.
How rare is it?
