Portrait 1, Re-Engraved, Large "W", "Dots"
1896 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The first of these 1896 Varieties is very easy to identify. Not only does it have the Portrait 1 likeness of Queen Victoria, but also, it has a couple of very interesting features which can be found in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". It appears that most, if not all, of the letters in this word had been Re-engraved but one of these is of particular interest. The "w" has been Altered with a larger Re-engraved letter but the original is still clearly visible beneath this new modified "W"! In addition, there is a very intriguing Cluster of Dots, which can be observed between the last "N" and "D" and also, in the interior open section of the "D". This anomaly is likely a Mint Error but it is still a very important characteristic which can be most useful for the identification of this Variety. As an additional point of interest, this exact feature can also found on the Portrait 1, Large "W" variety of the 1898 Fifty Cent coinage as well. This indicates that the same Obverse Die had been used for both of these years!
