Wide Date, Portrait 1, Large "W" & "Dots"
1898 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The first of these varieties has a Wide Date and is best known for its Large "W", Portrait 1 Obverse. It is not only distinguished by its Over-punched Letter "W", but also, comes with a cluster of tiny Dots, located between the Letters "N" and "D" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND"! It appears that this same Obverse Die, containing these Dots, was originally used for the 1896 Fifty Cent coinage! This particular variation is fairly common in the Lower grades but is quite scarce when it is found in the Higher classifications.
