Narrow Date, Portrait 2, Small "w"
1898 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The last of these known varieties has a Narrow Date and is also found with the Smaller "w", like the previous example. However, in this case, the Obverse was struck with the newer Portrait "2" effigy, which presented Queen Victoria with a slightly older appearance. Also, as mentioned in the previous example, the "8" in this instance, has been punched slightly Higher in the date, resulting in a Wider Gap between itself and the Ornamental Beads. The coins of this variety are fairly easy to find in Lower grades but they are much more difficult to locate in near Mint State conditions or better.
