Narrow Date, Low "40" (Low "0")
1940 Newfoundland 5 Cents · George VI
The first in this group of varieties has a Narrow Date and it appears to be one of the easiest to locate within this family of coins. It can be recognized by observing the position of the "4" and "0" with respect to the first two digits in the date. In this case, they are both lower, with the "0" located very close to the Decorative Loop, found directly below it. Unlike the other varieties, this variation is noted for the absence of any significant modifications to any of the Numerals in the date! This simple feature along with a Narrow Gap between the "4" and the "Loop", make this a relatively easy variety to recognize.
