Narrow Date, Uneven "4's" (Low "4" - High "4")
1944 Newfoundland 5 Cents · George VI
All of the Narrow Date varieties can be recognized by the positioning of the second "4", which has the Point of its Base, aligned (almost) evenly to the Front Face of the Ornamental Loop. With this particular variance, the First"4" has been punched slightly Lower in the date, and together with its twin companion, they appear to be Sloping gently downward to their left. The location of the First "4" between the "9" and the last "4", is quite important to the identification of these varieties. In this case, it has been positioned a little to the Right of the Centre point of these two digits, making the Gap between the "94" slightly Wider than that of the "44". It will be seen that the Spacing between these Numerals, will often vary noticeably among these different varieties.
