Widest Date, High "4", Farthest "7"
1947 Newfoundland 5 Cents · George VI
The second of the Wide Date varieties is similar to the previous example, having the Wider gap between the "4" and "7". However, in this case, the "4" has been punched slightly Higher than the "7", which does not show any signs of Tilting. Also, it should be noted that the base of the "7" is located slightly behind the front face of the decorative loop, making it the Widest Date of these four varieties. In addition, it should be noted that all of these variations display some signs of Re-punching to the "7", however in this instance, it is perhaps the most recognizable with a sliver from the original character, still clearly visible along the back of this digit. With the other three varieties for this year, all have their Mint Mark’s “c” punched in a Centre position under the “Oval” decoration, but in this instance, it has been positioned slightly Lower ” and a little farther to the Left. Finally, it should be mentioned that the presence of Die Polishing Lines are not a major feature of this particular variety, but they can be found within the interior and around the Letter “N”, in “CENTS”.
