Modified Obverse (Heavily Re-Engraved Letters)
1873 Newfoundland 10 Cents · Victoria
This variety is particularly interesting because of its Heavily Re-Engraved Obverse Lettering. All of the Letters (in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND"), have been Modified along with some of the others in the inscription. However, six of these are especially noteworthy, because a substantial portion of the Original Characters, is still clearly visible. The effect of these Altered Letters is definitive and quite striking! Finally, mention must be made of the Reverse side Legend, which like the previous variety, also has a Repunched "7" and a Modified Letter "T". However, as mentioned in the description of the aforementioned variation, the Letter "T" appears to be slightly different. Both of these variations are very scarce (particularly in better grades), but examples of this Heavily Modified variety are extremely rare and difficult to find in any condition!
