Portrait 2 "Narrow Date"
1894 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
At first glance, the Portrait 2 Varieties may not appear to be very different from each other but upon closer scrutiny, their differences can be seen to be quite noticeable! The first of these two known varieties is a "Narrow Date" but this label is more descriptive of the relative positions of the internal numerals than it is with its overall appearance. In particular, the spaces between the "1", "8" and "9" are considerably Narrower than they are on the "Wide Date" variety. Also, there are some minor alterations to the Reverse Side Lettering (in particular the "S") but these are relatively subtle as compared to those found on the following "Wide Date" variety!
