Portrait 2, Wide Date, Small "96"
1896 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
The second of the Small "96" varieties has a Wider Date than its aforementioned companion. It can be easily recognized by the Wide Gap found between the "9" and "6" and also, by the near proximity of the "6" to the Ornamental of Beads. Often, coins of this variety are confused with the Portrait 1, Large "96" variation, because the "6" in both cases, has been punched very close to the Beads. However, by comparing the digits between these two varieties, it can be readily seen that these are smaller, finer and spaced farther apart than those of the Large "96" variance.
