Narrower Date, Large "9's"
1899 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
The second variety initially appears to be identical to the TYPE I, Wide Date but upon closer inspection, some subtle differences can be observed. The most noticeable of these can be seen on the letter "T" (in the word "CENTS") which like the previous example, has its Right Foot extended outward from the stem of the "T" but it is not quite as long as the previous example. Also, the Left Hand is more complete than that of its companion but it is still not nearly as well formed as the Right Hand of this letter. This effect leaves the "T" with an overall unbalanced look to it! Finally, the gap between the last "9" and the Beads is slightly wider than with the previous variety making the date slightly Narrower. Also, the "9" tilts to the left of its central axis but with this variety, the angle is more acute than with its companion. Finally, it should be noted that most of the these varieties show some signs of Repunching of the "1" but in this instance, the "8 & 9" also show some subtle signs of Modifications.
