Wide Date, Centre-Right "H", Wide "87"
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The four known Wide Date varieties can be subdivided into two Groups, with the first two examples having moderately Shorter Dates than the final two variations. All of them have relatively Even Dates, with some minor variations to the last two digits. This is quite unlike the Narrow Date variances, which are seen to have Uneven Dates, with the last two digits being, in many cases, Punched considerably Lower. This first Wide Date variety has a Wide Gap separating the "8" from the "7", whereas, the next variation has a noticeably Narrower space between these two numerals. In order for this characteristic to have any relevance, it must be first determined if the coin in question belongs to this first group. This variety also has its share of Re-engraved Letters, but in this instance, their effects are lackluster at best, with none being outstanding! Finally, all of these Wide Date variations, have their Mint Marks located to the Right, over the Left Leg of the "N" but their positions above it, vary between these varieties. In this case, it has been punched Higher than any of the other Wide Date variations, leaving the "H" located very close to the Knot in the Wreath.
