Wide Date, Centre-Right, Re-punched "H", Narrow "87",Repunched “2”, Re-Engraved Lettering
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular Wide Date variety has the Narrowest Gap between the "8" and "7" of all of these known Wide Date variations. As a result, the date is not quite as Wide as the last two variations listed in this section. In addition, the Mint Mark "H" is particularly interesting because it appears to have been Over-punched by a Larger "H" than the Original Letter. Remnants from this character can still be seen between the two uprights of this Modified “H”. Nearly all of the Letters found in the Reverse Legend, display some traces of having been Altered, but the Letters "N" and "E" are particularly interesting. In addition, all of the digits appear to have been Re-punched, but the “2” is the most interesting of these, where a tiny remnant from the Original Character can be seen at the Upper Left side of this number.
