Narrow Date, Low "3", Wire Border Spurs
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
(Narrow "87" & "Die Clash")
The first of these Narrow Date varieties appears to be one of the more commonly found variations within this family of varieties. In this instance, it can be generally identified by two tiny Spurs located under the 1st “D” and the “A” in “NEWFOUNDLAND”, and also by the Numeral “3”, which has been punched noticeably Lower in the date, than the preceding “7”. In addition, the Gap between the "8" and "7" is slightly Narrower than it is with the following variety. Some of the coins from this particular variation exhibit signs of a significant Double "Die Clash", which can be seen as two lines running down from either side of the date towards the Rim. As a result, a faint image of the Queen's face can be observed on the Right side of the Crown. These coins are relatively rare but they do appear occasionally. In addition, this variety displays many Re-engraved Letters on its Reverse side, with some of these being more prominent than others. Of particular interest are the Modified "E's", found in "CENT" and "NEWF", and also the "D", in "LAND".
