Wide Date, Re-Engraved "E"
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular variety just barely makes it into the Wide Date category but the size of the date is relatively unimportant to its identification! However, it can be readily seen that many of its Reverse side Letters have been significantly Modified. All three of the "E's" display definite signs of Re-engraving but none is as spectacular as the second "E", in the word, "CENT"! The remnants of the original Letter, are so clearly visible as to make it a Defining Characteristic of this particular variety. It is very easy to recognize, even without the use of a magnifier!
