Widest Date, Even "73", Re-Engraved "T"
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The final variety listed here, has the Widest Date of all of these known variations. This can be attributed to the exceptionally Wide Gaps which separate the final three digits of the Date. The end result has left the "3" farther to the right and closer to the Beads than with any of the other varieties. Also, it should be observed that the positioning of the "3" has left most of this numeral outside of the area covered by the Ornamental Bar. This in itself, is a unique feature which helps to define this specific variation. With all of the other examples, listed in this section, their respective "3's" have been almost completely covered by this Device. Finally, it should be noted that the Letter "T", in the word "CENT", has been Re-engraved but in this instance, it has resulted in a rather Crude and Distorted Character!
Note: On the following photos, many of the Re-engraved letters have been highlighted with a bracket, [A], in order to emphasize the more extensively altered letters. Several of these can be very helpful with the identification of a particular variety and have been included as enlargements, which can be found at the end of the photo section.
