Wide Date, Slightly Lower “76”, Low, Short “F”
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The first of these Wide Date varieties is particularly interesting and it appears to be a very scarce variance. The last three digits in the date have been evenly space by two Wide Gaps and the “76” has been punched slightly Lower than the “18”. It has several Re-engraved Letters on the Reverse side, but only the “F”, in “NEWF”, can be considered significant. In this instance, the “F” is noticeably Shorter than those found on any of the other varieties; it has been positioned Lower in the inscription, and also, it has been Re-punched! This Letter, in itself, can be considered as a defining characteristic! The Mint Mark “H” has been punched slightly Higher, and a little farther to the Left of the “N” for this variety.
