Wide Date, Re-Engraved "E" & "F"
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This is the second of two Wide Date varieties listed in this section. It is defined primarily by the Wider Gaps, which can be found separating the final three numerals in the date. The overall effect has been to stretch the date a little farther to the right, making it (and the following example), the Widest in this series of varieties. With the exception of these Wide Date variations, all of the other examples display at least one Narrow Gap between these three last digits. Also, in this case, the "7" has a slight downward Tilt to its Left. In addition, it should be mentioned that some of the Reverse side Letters display definite signs of having been Altered. This is particularly evident with the letters "E" and "F", found in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". As a result of these modifications, the base to the vertical section of the Letter "F", has been left with a pronounced "Fan-like" appearance. Also, the Mint Mark "H" has been punched quite noticeably to the Right, leaving about a third of it covering the Left Leg of the "N".
