Widest Date, Low (Near) "6", Re-Engraved "E"
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The second of these Wide Date varieties is perhaps one of the rarest variations in the Victoria Large Cent series. It is very easy to identify by first observing the size of the Gaps between the last three numerals of the date. In this instance, they are noticeably Wider than with any of the other varieties within this group. In addition, the "6" has been punched slightly Lower, and quite Close to the Ornamental of Beads. This variety also demonstrates some traces of Re-engraving, but the "E", in the word "ONE", is particularly noteworthy because of its strikingly, Off-centered appearance. In this instance, the modified character has been cut Lower with a Notch at its base, and with a slight Tilt to its Left! Finally, the Mint Mark "H", which looks more like a solid block than a letter, has been punched noticeably farther to the Right, and at least half of it covers the Left Leg of the "N"!
Note: * It appears that all of the original Reverse Side dies used for this date, had significant
problems with the Lettering in the Legend, and required extensive modifications prior
to the coin productions. This was particularly true of the Letters "E", which were all
found to have been Altered on every coin (of this date) that had been examined!
However, these modifications were often significantly different among these dies,
leaving the individual Letters with their own unique characteristics!
Note: For any of the following photographs, a Letter enclosed by a Square Bracket [F],
will indicate that there is a corresponding photo of an enlargement for that Letter.
These are considered (by this author) to be some of the more interesting and important Re-engraved Characters for this particular date.
