Narrow Date, Re-Engraved "E" & "U"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This first variety has one of the Narrowest* Dates within this very large family of 1880 Large Cent variations. It can be easily recognized by observing both the Narrow Gaps, which separate each of the numerals in its date, and by the very Wide space between the "0" and the Ornamental Beads, located to its Right. Also, it should be noted that the two "8's" have been noticeably Re-punched, and many of the Letters on the Reverse Inscription, show definite signs of having been Altered. This is particularly noticeable with the Letters "E" and "U", in "ONE" and "NEWFOUNDLAND" respectively. In the first case, the "E" has been given a slight Tilt to its Right, which has left the original character exposed at the Top, Left side of this Letter, and in the second instance, the Re-Engraved "U" displays remnants from the Original letter on its Right side, which is a common feature found on most of the Victorian Large Cents. (* Originally this variety had the Narrowest Date, until the following, TYPE I (b) was discovered)
