Wide Date, Low "8", Doubled Wire Border
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular Wide Date variety has some very interesting features. The Wire Border at the Perimeter on the Reverse side, has a couple of locations where it has been doubled! The most obvious of these can be seen at the Top of the coin above the word "ONE". It appears to be a unique characteristic which is only found on this variety. Also, the Letter "N", in the word "ONE", has been Re-engraved with the original digit protruding from its top. Like many of the other examples, there are some signs of Re-punching to the 8's, but in this case, their effects are far less dramatic. In addition, the second "8" has been punched slightly Lower, which contrasts directly with the previous two listings, where they are noticeably Higher. Finally, it should be noted that on the Reverse side, the Top Outside flower is totally detached from its stem. The other varieties for this year, show considerable weakness in this area, but in this case, there is a complete absence of the plant's stem at this location.
