Wide Date, Low "80", Re-Engraved (Spur) "E"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This variety and the two subsequent variations, have one common characteristic; each has a Low "0" punched into its respective date. However, the impact of this feature is considerably different among them! In this instance, both the "8" and "0" have been positioned Lower, leaving the date with a gradually downward sloping appearance, leading towards the Beads. This effect is very different from that of the following example where the "0" seem to "Fall Off" suddenly, from the end of the date!
Once again, the Reverse side Lettering should be examined for any signs of Re-Engraving, which might be helpful with the identification of this variation. In this case, the Letter "E", in "ONE", has been Re-engraved with a tiny "Spur" protruding from its back. Also, the “0” has two noticeable “Dimples” which have formed on either side of this digit. These features are very uncommon, but are specific to this variety and they can be used to identify it.
