Wide Date, "Dot" (Under "U"), Re-engraved "E's" & Wire Border Doubling (Under the "LA")
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This example could be considered the beginning of a rather difficult group of Wide Date varieties to identify. It is a problem because of the difficulty with the recognition of the specific characteristics which are associated with a particular variance. In this instance, the defining feature is a tiny "Dot", which is located just under the "U", in "NEWFOUNDLAND". In addition, there are still a few other characteristics which will be useful with the recognition of this variety. All three of the "E's" in the Reverse inscription have been Re-engraved, but these modifications are only subtle at best. Also, there is a small section of the Wire Border beneath the "LA", in "LAND", which has been doubled.
