Wide Date, Even, Tilted "0", High, Re-Engraved "F", Extraneous Spur Below & Between Letters "D" & "L"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular Wide Date variation, is a little unusual because of the positioning of the "0" in the date. Whereas, so many of the other variations have this digit punched Lower, this specific variety has an Even "0"! Under normal circumstances, this would not seem to be particularly unusual, but when considering that there are so many variations with Low "0's", it becomes an important factor while making comparisons with some of these other varieties! Also, it has been Tilted slightly to the Left, making it unique in this respect. Overall, this is one variety which goes against the general trend! The Letter "F", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", illustrates a noticeable "Doubling" effect which can be considered as a defining feature of this particular variation. In this case, it is one of three varieties which show significant Modifications to this Letter, but each has its own specific characteristics. In this instance, the Re-Engraved "F" has been cut slightly higher over the original Letter, leaving some its remnants clearly visible below each arm. In addition, there are several other letters which have been extensively Altered, with the "E", in "ONE", and the "N", in "CENT", being of particular interest! Finally, there is an extraneous Spur which can be clearly seen below the Wire Border between the Letters "D" & "L", in "NEWFOUNDLAND".
