Coin #1 in Barry's study

This particular variety is extremely scarce and is one of the most popular with collectors of the Newfoundland Large Cent series. It is quite easy to identify with its very distinctive Narrow or Oval "0", which is unique among the many variances for this date. Like the other varieties, it also exhibits traces of Re-engraving to the Reverse side Lettering, however, with the exception of the Letter "E" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND", these effects are generally muted. This "E" is particularly interesting because these Alterations leave it with the appearance of an "F" punched over the original character (but only on some of these coins). It is possible to speculate about this unusual occurrence, but it is quite likely that this letter may have been Repunched after the Die had been in production for some time. The base of the "E" has been very weakly struck and does not appear to have benefited from these Modifications.
