Wide Date, Wide Gap “80”, Oval “0”
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This is an extremely rare variety (with only 2 currently known to exist) and is very interesting because of its relationship to the previously listed Oval “0” variation. The date is slightly Wider and the Gap between the 2nd “8” and the Oval “0” is also noticeably Wider. (It would appear that the “0” is even Narrower than that found on the more familiar variety, but this could be difficult to confirm with any certainty).
Note: Three of these varieties can also be found on Page 105 of Hans Zoell's 1962
Catalog: JX605b Wide 0, Even Date (TYPE I - ND); JX605c Wide 0, Low 0
(TYPE III (f) - WD, Low "0") and X605d Narrow 0 in date (TYPE IV - Narrow or
Oval "0")
**Note: Both of the High "8", Wide Date varieties TYPE III (b) & TYPE III (c) appear to be
extremely rare. In the dozen or so years that I have been working on this Large
Cent section, I have only come across 4 of the TYPE III (b) and 2 or the TYPE III (c) varieties!
Originally when I wrote this note, I thought that these variations might have been
unique, but since then I have found a few mores.
Also, the TYPE III (b) variety has an unusual fold over the denticles above the
"ONE". I have only one example which displays this feature, which might
suggest that it is a unique anomaly. Without more information, I do not feel that I
could include this as characteristic in the description, other than to say that it is
a curiosity!
Note: In the following photos, a letter enclosed in a square bracket [E], represents a
Prominently Re-engraved Character, which in itself, could help to identify a
specific variety.
