Narrow Date & Re-Engraved Letters (e.g., "E's" & "F")
1890 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The first of these varieties has a Narrow Date, which can be identified by observing the size of the gap between the "9" and the "0". In this case, these two numerals are situated closer to each other than they are for any of the Wide Date varieties. Also of importance, are the three "E's", located on the Reverse side legend. Each of these has been noticeably altered but two of these in particular, in "CENT" and "NEWFOUNDLAND", have been so Extensively Modified that they can be used to make a positive identification of this variety! To avoid any confusion, it should be noted that the "E's" found on the other varieties, have also been Re-engraved, but the effects are not quite as conspicuous as those observed on this example! Also, the Letter "F", found in "NEWF", has been noticeably Modified, but it is a characteristic which is also common to the other varieties, in varying degrees!
